I cannot think of a work around in 2.7.1. Maybe other users can help.

But I would like to mention
https://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/SAK-4392in 2.9. You can take a
look at it in the Sakai trunk or any 2.9 QA
instance. I think this can address your issue.
