[Using Sakai] Resources Changes for Sakai 11

I like "Client Connect". I understand steering clear of "webDAV" but when you use something like "Cyberduck" or NetDrive that has 5-6 connection type choices and the user needs to choose one that says "webDAV" then at least they can connect the terms together.

I agree with the comments that 'Desktop' may give the wrong impression. We could use a term like 'Client Connect'. Keep in mind that the current button is significantly wider than the other buttons in that space. We'd like to skinny that up.

As far as WebDAV goes, we are going to steer away from that term. Polling indicated that 88% of our users are unfamiliar with the term WebDAV.

Regarding "Desktop Access" Label.

Since the web-dav function is also very useful for connecting the Resources to tablets and phones, I'm thinking "Desktop" is sounding a little dated.
Maybe something like "File connections" or SakaiDrive or SakaiConnect or or even something simple like "Connecting Resources via Webdav"?
Others changes are great. Thanks!

Separate topic, but here is my wish list based on working with lots of end users. Not sure if these are in any future plans.

1. Select multiple files and a download selected just from the web interface maybe to a .zip?

2. Connect to cloud file storage like Google Drive, Dropbox, Box etc.

3. Somehow visually or label separate folders created via Lesson builder from the rest of folders in resources (this messes some people up).

4. Drag/drop functionality.

Or even "Desktop Access Instructions".

I think that "Setup Desktop Access" aligns more with the instructions the user will actually see when that button is clicked. "Desktop Access" is slightly shorter but might create the expectation that all you have to do is click to have desktop access to Resources.

Hi all,

The University of Michigan is working on a series of small to moderate Resources tool enhancements for Sakai 11 (looking forward), and I wanted to bring them to your attention as well as for your opinions:

SAK-25709 Create option to hide/show columns in the Resources tool for a cleaner display based on user feedback we've received
SAK-25668 Show soft-deleted files in a separate "trash" section, that includes the parent folder structure
SAK-25766 Relabel button from 'Upload-Download Multiple Resources' to 'Desktop Access'

The last JIRA is the smallest, but possibly the most contentious, since it involves a change in terminology. We propose changing the Resources 'Upload-Download Multiple Resources' button to 'Desktop Access'. The thought is that this will provide a better (and shorter) label for users, as well as differentiating it from the cool new drag-n-drop UI that is available in Sakai 10 (SAK-22306).

Please let me know if you have any concerns with this relabeling - as with all UI strings in Sakai, you can always localize this string for your own institution in a properties file. Barring any objections, we'll commit this small change next week.

Thanks,
- Beth
