[Using Sakai] site aliases

I had a site and it asked for an email alias, so I used abc-committee at sakai.xxx.com

Then I wanted a site alias for the URL, and (naturally!?) wanted the same name,
                  Sakai.xxx.com/portal/site/abc-committee

But it complained that that alias was already in use.
Indeed in the database I see that alias_ID's must be unique, and *either* point to a site URL or an email channel.

This seems odd to me, in that an alias should be the same for a site, used for both.

Am I understanding this correctly? Any work-around?
