[Using Sakai] SCORM player for 2.9?

At Indiana University we have spent some time working with SCORM players, so I do have some things to report.

First of all, we are interested in a general solution like SCORM because we have licensed (at varying levels) several software packages that can produce SCORM output - Adobe Captivate, Adobe Presenter, SoftChalk, Raptivity, and I think there are some people using Articulate. For us these are the major packages that could really support online/blended learning very nicely if we took advantage of the SCORM capabilities.

It has probably been close to 3 years since I really started digging in to the SCORM player issue in Sakai. At that time, Edia had begun some development on the SCORM player originally written at UC Davis, but it was still lacking in a lot of features. Rustici has a very nice SCORM player with excellent reporting, and it has been integrated into Sakai. They have worked with a number of people in the Sakai community, including IU, to get the player working well. Their pricing model was a little difficult to handle in our environment, but we were looking for the money when the Edia player got some much-needed attention. Some of the missing pieces had already been added when I looked at it again, and I was able to work with Roland Groen at Edia to get a few other tweaks done. We did some testing and put the Edia player on our practice server to check the integration with the IU gradebook, and things all looked good

However, just when we were ready to launch it as a pilot on production, we discovered a bug (an already know bug, but a discovery for me) that made it a no go. I'm hoping that bug can be fixed. The Edia player (minus the bug) works really well with SoftChalk SCORM output. It's a little shaky with Captivate and Presenter output, but Adobe SCORM is known to be less than "standard". I haven't had a chance to work with Raptivity SCORM very much, so I can't say how it works in the Edia player.

Once the bug gets fixed, we will plan to pilot the player, particularly for people who are using SoftChalk. We are still using 2.7 at IU, so I can't speak to the compatibility with later versions.

That's what I can tell you about the SCORM player. Let me know if you have further questions. I will say that SoftChalk, Rustici, and Edia have all been pretty good folks to work with, and I've had many questions answered and tweaks made as I have explored and tested all this stuff.

Thanks,
Maggie

Subject: [Using Sakai] SCORM player for 2.9?

Hi
I'm surprised we've made it this long without much interest in SCORM and Softchalk but we've finally gotten some pressure here. Rustici's player looked like one of the few commercial options until recently, but reviewing some discussions on list it seems like the Contrib SCORM player was greatly improved by Edia.

First, does anyone want to speak to their experience working with either of these?

Second, as best as I can tell from my web searching, neither is compatible with 2.8, let alone 2.9. Is anyone starting the work of upgrading the contrib tool to work with 2.9, or know of Rustici's plans?

I will also post this on the dev list...
