Hi Leah, John and all,

Thanks for starting such an interesting conversation.

We are also interested in finding out how others in the Sakai community think about video hosting/storing in Sakai and integrating with other external systems.
The particular areas we'd like to hear from you:

* Do you host/store video files in Sakai or in a separate system (e.g. a video repository system)
* If you host video files in Sakai, what tools do you use to upload and publish them, e.g. Resources, Podcasts, News?
* What is your policy on quotas for hosting or storing video in Sakai ?

* If you host your media files outside of Sakai, what systems are they?
* Any policy and technical issues around access control - private access and user authentication?
* Any thought on the future directions of video hosting/storing/publishing?

Thanks very much in anticipation!

Kind regards

Fawei

Hello Leah.

The University of Michigan began piloting Kaltura and the Sakai Media Gallery Extension this term. The Sakai integration provides some nice tools for uploading, organizing, and sharing media. It includes a FCKEditor plugin that allows you to insert media into several sakai tools including assignments, announcements, recourses, etc. Kaltura has a very broad user base that includes top-tier corporations and educational institutions, so its scalability has been well proven. The company has been very responsive to our input and has made several changes to the product based on our requirements. In regards to your cost question, there are many options ranging from running the open-source locally to a fully hosted solution, so I can't give you a ballpark figure.

In our experience most of the complicated issues around implementing Video Content Management are ones of policy. The product itself is relatively straight-forward to implement and use. Again, we are early in our pilot, so I suspect we will have a more mature view of the tool. I know there are other sakai institutions with a longer history with the product, so perhaps they can provide a longer-view perspective.

I would be happy to discuss this issue in more detail with you.
