[Using Sakai] Math Science Equation Editing Options with FCK editor

Hannah,

Thanks for asking (and sharing). I went to check it out and what I find
interesting is that WIRIS appears to look and function very similar to the
Blackboard 9.1 plug-in for equations. I know first-hand that many faculty
without LaTeX or MathML experience welcome the use of something like this
because it mimics the experience of MathType in MS Word. This means an easy
learning curve and quick adoption even though it requires Java to run it.

What I also like about it (even if it isn't open-source) is the promised
future inclusion of LaTeX and MathML. When that actually happens, I think
it's a very worthwhile product, but then cost may be the issue. My
two-cents: If you're looking for something to gain widespread use through
ease of use, this may be your ticket. If you only have a handful of faculty
who need this functionality, you may still consider the existing options
such as MathML or MimeTeX (see

their instance), or low-tech screen-shots of MathType from MS
Word/PowerPoint (not ADA-compliant, I know).

Sincerely,
