[Using Sakai] video equipment

In the Language Center here instructors have been been capturing video using
a "capture cart" (a video camera connected to a MacBook on a small cart)
which they upload to student drop boxes
(http://www.stanford.edu/~kenro/essays/ClassroomVideoCapture.html). The
trick is setting the encoding so that the resulting file is small enough to
upload through the web interface - webdav is OK, but I have found that the
web interface is often preferrable because it requires the least amount of
training.
However, we do need to be realistic: if you are doing video, up/downloading
is just never the right option. There should be an integrated video service
*everywhere* in Sakai which ingests video and delivers it in a streaming
form, whether in materials, the drop box, assignments, the home page, etc.:

Red5 or Wowza or something like that is the way to go. In 2009,
students/instructors/staff *expect* this of anything on the web.

While Adobe Connect is already an investment we've made (and integrated with
Sakai) - I'd love to see what could be done with Red5 (
http://osflash.org/red5 ) and Sakai. It seems like a fit from a technology
perspective - and could probably be easy enough to build a "record to Sakai"
type of tool (that uses CHS for storage of streams). I dropped the war into
a running Sakai dev instance today and it started up fine.

Hi Susan
Ken Romeo has had to upload video for language classes for a while and might
have something to say.

More than that, he's had this idea that it would be cool to be able to
record directly from your computer to Sakai, ala Facebook. By saying this,
I'm not suggesting that we're in a position to develop that functionality,
but he's been wondering if there are others out there who would be
interested in that.

Hello all,

In Boston, many of the sessions were recorded or streamed through UStream.
I'm curious to know what equipment was used to capture the session. It
looked like those that were recording were using something as small as a
phone placed on mini tripods. Was everyone using the same thing? Or, were
different products used.

We would like students to record themselves and place their recorded file in
the Drop Box of Sakai.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Susan
