I heard from two others attending AERA in San Diego next week.
If you have a presentation or will be attending, please feel free to
share information with the community.
Perhaps we can find a place on Confluence to share research /
conference papers?

TUESDAY, APRIL 14:
Using Learning Management Systems for Course Projects: A Case Study of
Student Collaboration
Scheduled Time: Tue, Apr 14 - 10:35am - 12:05pm Building/Room:
San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina / Newport Beach
In Session: Designing Online Instruction
Author:
*Steven Lonn (University of Michigan)
Abstract:
This case study examined how undergraduate students used project
site capability available through the campus Learning Management
System (LMS) to work together to produce a required group project.
Students' survey responses and aggregated event log data were analyzed
to see if students’ project site use was consistent with their beliefs
about project site activities and tools. Overall, students regarded
the activities and related tools within the LMS very positively and
thought that their assignments were more successful because of their
use of LMS for their group project. Students rated activities related
to the management of materials and communication within their group
higher than interactive online activities such as answering questions
from group members.
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 15:
Social Comparison Visualization for Fostering Participation in Online
Learning
Scheduled Time: Wed, Apr 15 - 1:15pm - 1:55pm Building/Room:
San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina / Marriott Hall Salon 4
In Session: Research on the Use and Effectiveness of Learning
Technologies
Authors:
*Ran-Young Hong (University of Missouri - Columbia) (rhe06 at mizzou.edu
)
*Krista Galyen (University of Missouri)
James M. Laffey (University of Missouri)
I-Chun Tsai (University of Missouri)
Abstract:
The purpose of this report is to describe a study of the use of
social comparison information and visualization techniques to foster
and support participation in online learning through implementation of
an interactive visualization tool (IVT). Data were collected through
usability testing, open-ended online discussion and survey methods to
examine usability and usefulness of the IVT. We have learned that the
IVT helped the students (1) monitor how active they were compared to
others, (2) see a whole picture of what was going on in class, and (3)
track group member actions while working on group projects. However,
some students felt as if they were being monitored and were concerned
about creating a sense of competition.

Adult Literacy and Adult Education SIG Business Meeting
Scheduled Time: Thu, Apr 16 - 6:15pm - 8:15pm Building/Room: San
Diego Convention Center / Room 25C
Title Displayed in Event Calendar: Adult Literacy and Adult
Education SIG Business Meeting
Session Participants:
Participant: Ann Brooks (Texas State University)
Abstract:
The Annual SIG business meeting will be followed by a film
screening and discussion of transformative citizenship education for
adult U.S. citizens. This will be led by film-maker Ann Brooks.
From Salwa Khan (sk16 at txstate.edu):
I co-produced and edited an "academic" video titled Immigration-La
ruptura de la familia" which will be shown at the Adult Literacy and
Adult Education SIG Business Meeting on April 16, 6:15PM at the San
Diego Convention Center, Room 25C. My co-presenter is Dr. Ann Brooks,
who taught the class in which we gathered the video interviews during
a ten-day trip to Cuernavaca, Mexico last year. Her name appears on
the program--lowly students don't even get second billing!
THURSDAY, APRIL 16:
Investigating Undergraduates’ Perceptions and Use of a Learning
Management System: A Tale of Two Campuses
Scheduled Time: Thu, Apr 16 - 8:15am - 10:15am Building/Room:
Manchester Grand Hyatt / Madeleine Room D
In Session: Technology and Learning in Higher Education
Authors:
*Steven Lonn (University of Michigan)
Stephanie D. Teasley (University of Michigan)
Andrew Edward Krumm (University of Michigan)
Abstract:
Learning Management Systems (LMS) are web-based systems allowing
instructors and/or students to share materials and interact online. We
explored the differences between undergraduate students at a large
residential campus with students at a smaller commuter campus who used
the same LMS. We examined students’ survey responses, focusing on
items related to materials management and interactive teaching and
learning. We also examined aggregated log data to see if students’ use
was consistent with their beliefs. Students from both campuses rate
highly all activities and tools within the LMS. Findings suggest,
however, that residential students value activities and tools for
materials management more than commuter students while commuter
students value activities and tools fostering interactive teaching and
learning more than residential students.
