[Building Sakai] Assignment Reminders?

Hi Gregory,

For this sort of regular process I would create a quartz script that hooks
into the assignment API to get the info, then send out an email to
students. This would be a pretty sweet integration, it could even be
configured in Assignments (send reminder x days before due). If I had a few
spare hours I'd love to do this!

Cheers

Is there any existing feature or user addition to have automated reminders
for non-submitted assignments?

The basic idea is that if there is a project due in various milestones over
a course, if a student has not submitted one they would get an email
reminder at some point, and then maybe another escalating one after the due
date, but before the last accept-until date?

Conceptually one could scan the database for assignments and submissions,
and then have some external program do this – but of course(!) such
database hooks are discouraged! :-)

Or is there enough information available from existing web-services to
implement such a reminder utility as an external program? (That seems
simpler and better to decouple it than as a part of a Sakai build.)
