[Building Sakai] Where do the Java errors go on Windows?

Hi

While monitoring an instance of Sakai on Windows, I noticed some Java errors in the Java console window. When I stopped tomcat and went to the \tomcat\logs directory, and looked in both catalina.out and catalina.2014-09-01.log, I could not find the Java errors. Why could I not find them - are they not logged to either or both of those files?
