[Building Sakai] User Validation API Question

I have an app that does not integrate directly with Sakai only it's database and I'm trying to figure out how to validate a user's password which is encrypted in the 'sakai_user' table. I was wondering if someone knew which method from what API I would be able to call in order to validate a user's typed in password against the encrypted one in the table?
