Description

The User Experience (UX) Specialist is a member of the CourseWork UX team within Academic Computing Services.  This group’s primary mission is to guide the design, development, and support of Stanford University's web-based learning management system (LMS), CourseWork, following a user-centered design process. Based on the open-source platform Sakai, CourseWork enables the creation of course websites, each of which has various tools to support faculty and students in teaching and learning. CourseWork supports 1000+ course websites each quarter.

As a UX specialist, you will be the primary advocate for users of CourseWork and other LMS-related software provided through Academic Computing Services. You will conduct user research on campus to inform the direction and definition of LMS software development and prioritize requirements for new or modified tool designs within CourseWork.

Responsibilities:

You will conduct design activities with the express purpose of improving the user’s ability to rapidly conduct teaching and learning activities within Stanford.   These activities include but are not limited to:
Create interaction and visual designs of CourseWork/tools.
Create and test prototypes demonstrating work/data flow within CourseWork.
Act as design resource to software development and QA throughout the product lifecycle.
Provide outreach and support to faculty regarding innovative and effective pedagogical uses of online learning systems.

You will work closely with User Support Specialists on the development and implementation of faculty support services such as:
Consulting/training in course design for faculty interested in implementing innovative uses of CourseWork to enhance their students’ learning experience. 
Provide necessary training/consultations for local CourseWork administrators, instructional staff and other constituents.
Participate in the development and delivery of documentation, user help, and training programs, through web pages, multimedia presentations, and workshops. The CourseWork UX team plays an active role within the Sakai open-source community. You will participate in UX-related discussions and working groups, and gather community feedback to improve LMS tools that may affect both local Stanford and the greater Sakai user community.

The UX Specialist reports to the UX Manager in Academic Computing Services within Stanford University Libraries (SUL) and will be located in Meyer Library.
Qualifications

A baccalaureate degree, plus at least 5 years experience in user-centered design. Master’s degree in instructional technology/user interface design highly desirable.
Experience working with learning management systems such as BlackBoard, WebCT, or Sakai.
In-depth experience creating wireframes using common design tools such as Photoshop, OmniGraffle, or Visio.
Skilled at creating functional prototypes. Experience with Axure highly desirable.
Strong familiarity with HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, expert level skills highly desirable.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to interact effectively and tactfully with members of the academic community; experience working in an environment where colleagues have diverse backgrounds and customs. A keen understanding of, and sensitivity to, the human factors involved in introducing technology into teaching and learning.
Background in course design including an understanding of the online components required tocreate effective course outcomes.
Excellent time management and project management skills. Demonstrated ability to manage a complex workload, prioritize tasks, and use good judgment in providing services based on goals.
A commitment to excellence in an environment where success is based on team contributions toward common goals rather than on individual accomplishments.
Experience in technology consulting or training.
Experience developing support resources (help documentation, video tutorials, and software demos) using Captivate, Camtasia, or similar software packages .

Job Description
The Instructional Design and Technology Specialist works under the Director
of Instructional Design & Technology at Rutgers-Camden, providing faculty
support to improve the design, development, implementation, and analysis of
student-focused, outcomes-based curriculum and instruction for online,
on-campus, and hybrid courses. With specialized knowledge of pedagogical
theory and instructional technology as applied in complex environments for
diverse audiences, the Instructional Design and Technology Specialist serves
as a primary point of contact for Rutgers-Camden instructors. The ID&TS
Specialist will provide support for Rutgers' course management systems,
including Sakai and eCollege. Responsibilities include the development and
delivery of training opportunities for full- and part-time faculty; the
creation and maintenance of faculty support resources; the ongoing support
of faculty in selecting and utilizing appropriate instructional software;
and the design and development of course structures and materials. The
Instructional Design and Technology Specialist assists with research and
assessment of current programs and student learning outcomes, participates
in departmental strategic planning, and pursues continuous professional
growth. Other duties may include serving on campus committees, coordinating
student workers, and related duties as required.

Job Requirements
Requires bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) and proficiency in
instructional and learning theories and their application, in addition to at
least two years of experience supporting the use of instructional technology
to enhance teaching. Must have experience teaching, preferably in higher
education settings, and knowledge of current technologies for instruction.
Requires working knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of
designing, developing, delivering, and evaluating educational programs. Must
have the ability to design and lead faculty workshops; assess technology and
software programs for instructional and other purposes; identify advantages
and limitations of using various technologies for instructional purposes;
effectively demonstrate instructional applications of technologies;
effectively communicate technical information to a non-technical audience;
and establish cooperative working relationships. Must be able to manage
projects from start to completion and manage multiple projects at different
phases of completion. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and
organizational skills, and the ability to work flexibly and patiently with
faculty and staff with diverse backgrounds and perspectives on the use of
technology in a variety of learning environments are critical requirements
of the position. Requires demonstrated experience with technologies
including course management systems, office productivity suites, multimedia
production software, web design, content management systems, social media,
and varied hardware platforms.

Special Conditions
Master's degree preferred. Demonstrated experience with the course
management systems Sakai and eCollege , plus proven ability to produce
multimedia projects and websites very helpful. Familiarity with web
conferencing, videoconferencing, lecture capture systems, WordPress or other
content management systems, Dreamweaver, modern HTML, and CSS useful.
Familiarity with Quality Matters or another course analysis system
preferred.
