[Building Sakai] ssl for webservices?

I found that using the examples of webservice logins (from Python) that I had to change it from HTTPS to HTTP, and then it all worked fine.

Is there any simple or standard way to enable SSL remote usage of the webservices, especially for authentication like this?
(Or should it have worked "out of the box"?)
