[Building Sakai] Manipulating Sakai's gradebook

What's the best way to interact with Sakai's gradebook from an external service?

I'm working on a piece of software that, among other things, allows students to complete assignments via linktool, and I'd like to post their grades on those assignments back to Sakai.
