[Building Sakai] Updating provider only option for role in existing sites

I'm trying to prevent our instructors (or everyone if I have to) from 
adding students to course sites, as this should be left to our automated 
provider.

I found the option to limit a role to group providers only in the 
realms, but of course setting this for !site.template.course only 
affects new sites.  And setting it for !site.helper does not seem to be 
taken into consideration.

I've found the script here

for sychronizing roles in existing sites using soap web services.  Is 
this the only way to change the providers only option for existing sites?
