[Building Sakai] Proposed changes to Site Info Tool Selection Page (SAK-16600)

Hi,
I apologize for the late response, was out Thurs and Friday.
I love the idea of grouping the tools, instead of displaying them alphabetically; it's going to help our users. But it would be great if we could have those categories expanded (so +1 on that idea). When we suggested using the accordion pattern for Samigo settings, it was because the settings are 7 page heights long. But regarding Site info, we only have 12 tools that we make available by default so they all fit on the same page (our descriptions are on the same line as the tool name which also keeps the page compact). We'll probably add up to 4-5 tools in the future, so the ability to group and possibly collapse them would be useful, but even then, it would probably fit on one screen. If all were collapsed by default, expanding all sections would entail 3-4 more clicks every time.

And thanks for your response to Adam re choosing own headings. Could those headings possibly appear in the left menu of the site, so the tools are grouped that way in the navigation? Although even as I say that, that requires some thought because instructors and students think of some tools differently: Calendar might be management for instructors but information for students, and wiki could fit into multiple categories, as Adam's diagram alludes to.

We would probably add a handful more tools over the next year, but roughly, we might configure it to look something like the attached (categories are off top of head, main point is just to show how they all fit on one page).

Keli

Seems like a popular idea -- I'll ask Gonzalo if this is easy to do.

This doesn't appear to be true (I was able to add multiple instances).

Is this possible? (We will also change the colours of the headings, do they each have their own class/id?)

Definitely configurable, and the classifications can be completely turned off as well.

Our initial thinking is to expand only the "core" group, but we'll look into optionally expanding all by default.

We had thought about the left tool menu as well, but for now feel that it's out of scope.
