[Building Sakai] Sakai CLE build java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space

I recommend working out the permission errors you are having. It should be as simple as creating a user, maybe called 'sakai', then making sure that the user 'sakai' has RW access to the Tomcat directory, then building and stating Tomcat as the 'sakai' user.

You should never run Tomcat as root since classes can read and write files anywhere in the filesystem. Plus also you have issues if you later want to change the owner of files, since things will be owned by root. If you absolutely need to run as a privileged user (perhaps because you need to run Tomcat standalone, or port 80 or something), you can use something like jsvc to allow this.

cheers,
Steve

I updated /etc/bash.bashrc because using export from the command line doesn't work for sudo (as sudo deletes most of the environment variables, even if you do "sudo export a=b; command").

What I appear to need to do is to copy the source directory to ~root, and compile as root. It runs at between 80 and 95% memory capacity (so up to about 975 Mb used) and seemed to be running fine at that level, but then the virtual server went down during the final tests - so I'll need to try again later.
