[Building Sakai] RV: is there any usable mobile code?

Hello,
Regarding getting schedule on your smart phone, we discussed this locally and there is another possibility other than having it feed to the app--view this through your calendar with real time iCal synching. I believe currently, you can get Sakai's calendar on your phone, but it doesn't update when changes are made. While I think an app would be easier for users to set up, at least an iCal sync would allow users to see their academic calendar in context of other events in their life.

Not sure if we'll pursue this route, but curious if this has been discussed by anyone. Will probably contact Michigan, since I think they were working on Schedule. It might not be that easy to do.

Hi Keli,

Have a look at the Kuali Mobility project (http://www.kuali.org/mobility and https://wiki.kuali.org/display/MOBILITY/Mobility+Home). Really good stuff!
They integrate with Sakai tool.

Cheers,
Jaques

Ah, so Mai is working on OAE mobile and Kasun is working on CLE mobile? And it seems there are at least two other CLE mobile efforts.

Not being highly technical, I wouldn't be able to judge which CLE mobile effort would fit our needs, so let me ask this: are any of these efforts making both Announcements, as well as Schedule information available?

I ask this because some Berkeley grad students did some research into what students would find useful if such a mobile interface into Sakai were developed and those were the top two (http://www.rolnitzky.com/artifacts/bspace.pdf). Their findings confirms our less comprehensive research--students just want an easy way to know what assignments they have to work on across their clases, and if there were any changes of plans. As such, we're hoping to have SAMigo integrate with Schedule (thank you Longsight), as Assignments already does. I was going to ask this community if there was a representation of the Schedule as a "to do list" for mobile.

I also ask because a representative from our student government is said they were going to search for volunteers to work on mobile solutions for our local Sakai instance. If someone is interested, we'd want to know who they could work with.

Thanks,

We at Samoo, are creating new RESTful services and and improving the actual ones in Sakai to allow more actions, so we can create a tactile and simplified interface for students. This is inside a very interesting project to help children in hospital to continue with their classes using tactile devices and Sakai in their rooms.

This is a sample of Schedule tool… “Hoy” means “Today” and “Próximamente” is “Next”):

So we are doing (or using if it exists yet) a restful service that returns us the list of the next events for a date and other that returns us the content of an event…

We are doing this for most of the tools.

When all these RESTful services will be finished it will allow too to create, in a more easy way, any complete mobile app that allows student to do almost all their daily tasks. We want to arrive to the level of allow to take a test from samigo or to send an assignment, to write a private message, etc…

We are trying to be in contact with the different tool leaders to contrib these developments, but of course we will be happy if some of you want to help in this huge task developing some of the services… maybe you have done it yet and we don’t need to do that work again!!!

If someone is interested into test this product when finished with real children at hospitals and/or want to collaborate with the design of the interface or other help… any help will be welcome. We are just finishing a document with the actual work done and the future work to be done (in the next months) and we can send it. We hope all those services will be included in future Sakai releases.

Actual documentation is in Spanish… sorry… but it will be very easy to understand because the name of services are in English (new ones too)

We are also working on a Sakai multi-platform (iOS, Android, WP7, Blackberry) native mobile app called Sakai2Go.

We will be presenting the app during the upcoming EuroSakai ( http://www.eurosakai.nl ) conference.

Out of it we have a bit of a framework to extend and create more mobile UI's for tools. It's not 'native' as in Cocoa Touch or Java, its HTML5, but it deploys as a native app via PhoneGap meaning the same code can be used across every platform. Code available. I've also CC'd Kasun, the student who worked on this.

The UI is JQuery Mobile, and uses Entity Broker to drive the data.

They sponsored someone at another institution to build a mobile front end, but it doesn't work very well. We're willing to put development manpower into it, but we need something that actually works to start with. Is there anything?
