[Building Sakai] Portal Chat

Personally, I have to imagine that the rest of the web is going to be a pretty strong forcing function in moving from IE7. Six months is also a lot of notice, so this may be completely manageable for the IT shops to handle.

But... If there is a real demand for both IE7 support and the portal chat, there is a possibility of using Flash storage as a fall-back from DOM Storage. This assumes that the markup and CSS behave in IE7, which may or may not be the case.

I haven't used it in a while, but I have had good success with Dojo's Storage module. It manages the feature detection process and gives a consistent API across a few storage providers. It can be used without the entirety of Dojo. Just food for thought.

Thanks,
-Noah

We're just now getting rid of some software that requires IE 7. 20% of our users used IE 7 at some point since July, although only 4% of our sessions use it.
