I think it would almost be trivial to get the new portal working on 2.8 or 2.7.  The changes are very clean, there are no new dependencies and no code has been restructured.  Code was added.    You (for yucks) could take

Drop it into a 2.7, tweak the poms a bit and it should likely compile with a minimum of fuss.
