Dear Friends,

I strongly support Mr. Mustansar Mehmood's suggestion. I would
like to request Sakai Developers to kindly consider a feature to
create, upload, export epub format e-books in Sakai . We can also look at a
feature available in Wikipedia where one could select the required
pages/topics and create a PDF book. Likewise there should be facility in
Sakai also. Faculty should be able to organize/export their lectures/course
material in epub format and make available to students. (I personally feel
that this option will be better that the Portable Sakai stored in USB/Pen
Drive).

As far as I know, i think there is no such facility in Moodle. So
may be Sakai can take a lead and be the first Open Source eLearning Tool to
have epub export feature.

Also e-book readers are far more convenient learning tool which are
being widely used by the educational community. From a developing
country/third world point of view, e-book reader is cheap/affordable when
compared to mini's/laptops. So there should be efforts from Open Source
eLearning community to support the epub format.

Please kindly consider this feature/suggestion. People who support
this feature inclusion can kindly consider voting for this Jira Issue
created by Mr. Mustansar Mehmood
(https://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/SAK-19938 )

Thank You

With Regards
Santhanam

Subject: [Building Sakai] ePub serving/exporting through resource tool

Dear All,

There is a recent proposition/request to have an option of having documents
being downloaded from resources tool in ePub format. For more
infohttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EPUB
1- One possible scenario is offering the uploader of the document to check
a box to indicate the preference for making the document available in Epub
format(Assuming document type can be converted into ePub format).
2- If the document uploader decides to make the document available in ePub
format then Sakai or can convert the doucment to ePub format while
retaining the copy of the original format available.
Initially this feature can be introduced as an experimental feature and be
enabled using sakai.properties. I have already created a JIRA issue for
this feature.
I am wondering if there are any other schools looking into the similar
directions.
Regards,
Mustansar

I have yet to see any problem, however complicated, which, when, you looked
at it in the right way, did not become still more complicated.
