[Building Sakai] error: javax.jcr.InvalidItemStateException

One of our developers occasionally hits the following error when updating a message (in this case we're implementing a custom message type called a reminder but it's basically a message)

Updating /~760063/message/6e/f9/7c/cd/6ef97ccdeceb3b9e237c2388d13c52690b32c157 failed with status =error and thrownError = undefined

Anyone know what's causing it or where to to start debugging it. It is very intermittent.
