Thanks matthew that was the problem. I was in a hurry and skipped that.

Probably related to having a blank site description. This was fixed recently
in 2.6.x in http://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/SAK-18548, and is fixed in
2.7.x. For a short term local fix, just fill something in the site
description.

We considered setting a default of "" on the database column but were unsure
what the other effects of this would be.
