[Building Sakai] Hierarchical Sites

There is the Site Hierarchy Service that I split out from the portal and the idea was that tools could use it to become parent-child aware. But that is as far as that went. We ended up using the same technique as what Adam mentioned, the merge capability to take items from a child and merge them up to the parent. This should work for Calendar and Announcements and anything else that supports merge so long as the user doing the initial merge has access to both the parent and child sites.

You might also be interested in the following patch which moves the list of subsites into their own section below the tools. It's in trunk and targetted for 2.8. IMO having the child sites mixed in with the parent site tools was a little confusing so this is a a pretty simple patch to the portal and css to move it slightly.
