[Building Sakai] Using Sakai 3 as a portal with Sakai 2.x as CLE?

I was recently asked to investigate the possibility of, and if anyone was looking into or using, a seperate instance of Sakai 3 as a portal while using Sakai 2.x as the CLE. Though this seemed a little odd to me and I haven't come accross any information about this set up yet, so I figured in order to get the information requested of me I'd hit the wise and powerful list and see what the general opinion / knowledge for doing this is. My initial guess is that using uPortal would probably be recommended / easier but my base knowledge regarding Sakai 3 is rather low at this point.
