[Building Sakai] Chatroom invitation/Instant messaging

Is anyone currently or thought about developing something like in SAK-5805<http://bugs.sakaiproject.org/jira/browse/SAK-5805> or SAK-7831<http://bugs.sakaiproject.org/jira/browse/SAK-7831> ? (pre sakai 3)
I imagine some modification of the presence tool is needed so you can click someone's name to send a chat request and they get sent to the chat room.
