It's not you, it's a Sakai release management problem.

Sakai 2.2.0 was originally released on July 19, 2006 but fix for 
this change was added to the 2.1.2->2.2.0 sql update file on 
January 17, 2007:

Size limitation in Profile - update 2.2.0 conversion script with 
field change

I assume this was targeted for the February 12, 2007 2.2.3 
release. There is a 2.2.0->2.2.1 and a 2.2.1-2.3.0, but nothing 
for 2.2.2 or 2.2.3. So, depending on when you took your copy of 
2.1.2->2.2.0 for the 2.1->2.2 upgrade, you may have missed this 
update. I did this and now have to go back and execute the ALTER.
