A followup, it was a JDK issue. 

@Override annotations crept into the Impl and they are not permitted in Java 1.5. Sorry gang.

Nightly servers and Hudson must be 1.6 if they built ok?

I can see more of these issues coming up as we get further past the 1.5 EOL and the backwards compatibility issue fades into the back of our minds. Especially now that some operating systems ship with 1.6 only.
