[Building Sakai] James configuration

Hi all,
We are experiencing issues with james and excalibur consuming a large number of tomcat threads.  Does anyone have any recommendations for james configuration to lower the load on our servers?  As far as I can tell, we are using OOTB settings (which was surprising considering the size of IU's sakai implementation).  Please let me know if you need additional information.
