[Building Sakai] How to connect to database using Sakai'api

Dear all,

As I know we have to insert a Academic term into db ourselves (Academic term
in creating a new Course site).

So I want to develop a tool that allow instructor can manage the Academic
term.

But I don't know how to use Sakai's api (db-api ???) to access Sakai's
database. So I need your help to do that J. 

By the way, where I can study Sakai's api to develop Sakai ???\
