The etherpad.ctools.org server is alive and well again - and working with a latest etherpad-lite implementation (http://etherpad.org/). You'll notice that etherpad URLs now have a new format: etherpad.ctools.org/p/<etherpad-name>. I've built in a rewrite rule to take care of legacy URLs that you may have bookmarked, so hopefully you wouldn't have to worry about this for legacy etherpads.
