[Deploying Sakai] Future of Sakai 2.7 and 2.8 and Tomcat

Fellow Sakai Community members,
On behalf of the TCC and CLE teams, I am providing a summary update
about the future of Sakai 2.7 and 2.8.

Sakai 2.8.2 is the current release and is the recommended version to
use in production.

There will be additional releases of 2.8 as needed.  The community
practice is to not QA these releases as heavily as the 2.9 code line.

Sakai 2.7 will reach end-of-life when the 2.9 release happens
(anticipated in 3rd or 4th quarter of 2012).
If you are running 2.7 you will want to check the 2.7.x branch
occasionally for bug fixes and patches as those will continue as long
as community members contribute them.

Tomcat 5.5 will be end of life in September of 2012.

Sakai 2.9 and higher will require the use of Tomcat 7.0+.
Currently, Sakai 2.7 and 2.8 require use of Tomcat 5.5 for webdav to
work properly. If you are interested in backporting the tomcat 7 work
to 2.8, please get in contact with me.
