INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNER



Wellesley College is hiring an Instructional Designer. This three year
position--funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support
blended learning--will improve our student experiences, and help us better
understand how online technologies enrich learning. Working closely with
faculty, the Blended Learning Initiative at Wellesley College, and
institutional support teams, this position will design, deliver and assess
courses and course materials for an online environment, and will provide
assistance to faculty in understanding effective course and curriculum
design for technology-enabled learning.



WHAT YOU’LL DO



Reporting to the Associate Director of the Blended Learning Initiative, the
Instructional Designer designs, develops and supports high­-quality,
customized instructionally effective solutions for online, blended and
traditional classroom courses. This position also provides faculty and
student support alongside research and instruction colleagues for standard
and innovative instructional technologies; collaborates closely with
Library & Technology Services (LTS) colleagues and the Blended Learning
Initiative to conduct needs assessment and usability analyses; leads and
participates in instructional/multimedia design projects; and develops the
efficient and reliable use of licensed and custom developed instructional
solutions. Specifically, the Instructional Designer will:



   - Design, develop, and support customized instructional solutions,
   including edX and other online course modules, for use in the College
   curriculum.
   - Assist faculty in developing engaging learning activities and
   assessments that are aligned with the objectives and meet the needs of
   diverse learners.
   - Collaborate with LTS colleagues and the Blended Learning Initiative to
   conduct needs assessment and usability analyses, and develop metrics to
   evaluate course design impact and success.
   - Collaborate with LTS colleagues and the Blended Learning Initiative to
   conduct workshops for faculty related to effective teaching strategies.
   - Lead/participate in interdepartmental teams and projects requiring
   technical expertise, particularly in the areas of instructional/multimedia
   design.
   - Communicate regularly with faculty, on/off campus partners, the
   Blended Learning Initiative,  and LTS colleagues to develop and ensure the
   efficient and reliable use of licensed and custom developed instructional
   solutions.
   - Provide technical support, instruction, and consultation one-on-one
   with end users,  through the ITIT support phone line, and at the Clapp
   Library Service Desk.





WHAT YOU NEED – EDUCATION



   - B.A./B.S. degree in relevant field.
   - M.A./M.S. degree in relevant discipline (Instructional Design,
   Instructional Technology, Education Technology) *strongly preferred*.



WHAT YOU NEED – WORK EXPERIENCE



   - 3-5 years of related work experience in an information services or
   discipline-related field (academic setting preferred).
   - Minimum of one (1) year experience working with course management
   systems (e.g. Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard, Desire2Learn/Brightspace, Sakai,
   edX, etc.).
   - Demonstrated experience in designing, developing and producing
   successful online course materials.
   - Demonstrated ability to collaborate with faculty and staff from a
   diverse set of disciplines, teaching philosophies, and desired outcomes.
   - Demonstrated knowledge and application of instructional design theory,
   instructional design principles, learning theory, instructional technology,
   and adult learning theory.
   - Demonstrated success in utilizing technology to enhance and expand
   learning.
   - 3-5 years of teaching individuals and groups, responsible for
   curriculum development and planning, and creation of examples and materials.
   - Demonstrated work experience leading and managing instructional,
   information and/or technology projects.



WHAT YOU NEED – SKILLS AND ABILITIES



   - Excellent customer service skills with emphasis on patience,
   helpfulness, and tact.
   - Project management and time management skills, a results-oriented
   approach to work, and ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines for
   multiple simultaneous projects.
   - Ability to work productively and collegially in a team­-oriented
   environment, as well as ability to work independently.
   - Evidence of ability to quickly learn new technologies, and sound
   judgment to gauge when—and when not—to use them for teaching and learning.
   - Proven written and oral communication skills.
   - Capable of working collegially with a diverse group of faculty, staff
   and students on a daily basis.
   - Independent decision-making balanced with regular review and
   collaboration with supervisor.
   - In-depth knowledge and demonstrated use of required image, audio and
   video software.
   - Skill in using OS X and Windows computers, tablets, smartphones, and
   related peripheral devices.
   - Expertise with standard office applications, and HTML. Scripting or
   programming expertise (e.g., Python), or XML a plus.



WHAT WE EXPECT



   - Projects fulfill specifications and are completed according to
   established schedules. Clear communication with stakeholders is maintained
   throughout the duration of the project.
   - Customized learning solutions are maintained, reliable, and meet
   faculty expectations and the instructional needs of the College.
   - Productive and collaborative working relationships are built and
   maintained across LTS and the college to deliver a cohesive and timely
   program of services to the community.
