*

The intent of the *Teaching With Sakai Innovation Award* is to recognize
excellence in teaching and learning. Since the first call for submissions
in 2008, educators from institutions around the world have submitted their
entries in the annual competition. This year, we look forward to entries
from those using the Sakai CLE and also those pioneering the Sakai OAE
(Open Academic Environment).

*Innovation Defined*

The TWSIA committee defines an innovative course or educational experience
as one that, by design, engages and challenges students, resulting in
greater student interest, a deeper level of understanding and/or a lasting
change in the students' perception of an issue or topic.

*Award Goals*

The major goals of the award are:

   - To promote excellent pedagogy and innovation in teaching and learning
   - To create a community of educators who want to share teaching and
   learning practices
   - To encourage greater faculty involvement in the Sakai community

This year we have two rubrics we will be using to evaluate entries--one for
Portfolios and one for Course and Project sites. The award entries are
evaluated against the appropriate rubric and the definition of innovation.
The rubrics are available at the OpenEd Practices web site at:
www.openedpractices.org/twsia. Information on previous winners is also
available on the site.
Entry Categories Entries are accepted in the following five (5) categories:

*- Traditional Higher Education (including web-enhanced courses)*

*- Fully Online/Hybrid Courses in Higher Education
*

*- K-12 (primary and secondary education)*

*- **Portfolios*

*-Project Sites & Other Uses of Sakai*

The Teaching with Sakai Innovation Award is organized and supported by the
Teaching and Learning group of the Sakai community, a geographically
dispersed community of practice composed of managers, faculty,
instructional technologists and consultants, instructional designers and
web designers who voluntarily devote time and energy to build awareness and
promote the needs of instructors who are using Sakai.
