My problem is that we have to put this in our trunk, or the patch will inevitably be harder to integrate. Not putting it in 2.9 would cause 2.9 to diverge from the version that is going to get most of our testing.

The other near-term plan is to make it possible to hide pages other than top level. Until I look at the code I don't know whether that's going to be safe enough. I'm afraid it may not be. I think it's going to be more complex than it sounds. I'm guessing that we'll have to split the code around the time when 2.9 moves into a branch.
