[cle-release-team] Revert SAK-20390 before 2.9 Branch?

Hi everyone -- the changes made in https://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/SAK-20390 explicitly do not work in IE, and are the root cause of SAK-21212 (listed as a blocker). Unless someone steps forward soon to fix them, I suggest that we revert the changes before we branch 2.9. Can we add this to Thursday's release team call agenda?
