1. 22 September 2003 -- Sakai's 10-Year Anniversary!

Colleagues,

Happy 10-year anniversary of the day the Sakai Project formally began to
take shape!

As I recall, Chuck Severance recounts this story in his book, and my
recollection is recorded in the 2007 OSS Watch commissioned case study
(excerpt below). The Mellon Foundation grant was approved on 15 December
2003 (thank you Ira Fuchs), and that may be a world record from concept to
funded project.

In the last decade, our institutions have learned a lot regarding how to
achieve things together. Happy birthday, everyone!

Project history (Excerpt from http://www.oss-watch.ac.uk/resources/cs-sakai
)

The Sakai Project was formulated at an impromptu dinner in Ann Arbor,
Michigan with Joseph Hardin (U. of Michigan), Amitava Mitra (MIT), Jeff
Merriman (MIT), Charles Severance (U. of Michigan), Lance Speelmon (Indiana
U.), and Brad Wheeler (Indiana U.) on 22nd September 2003. The project
built upon prior code-sharing collaborations between Indiana, Michigan, and
Stanford (with Lois Brooks) universities. Michigan, MIT, and Stanford had
also previously collaborated as part of the Open Knowledge Initiative (OKI)
Project. All four institutions had decisively chosen not to use a
commercial VLE and were independently pursuing development of a next
generation set of software tools to support education and research. Thus,
Sakai was born through a merging of efforts for home-grown systems with a
vision to scale the collaboration to a vibrant open source community. The
project agreed to combine the 'best-of' software tools and intellectual
property from its founders to create the Sakai software.

The Sakai Project was announced at EDUCAUSE in November 2003. The
University of Michigan, Indiana University, MIT, and Stanford University
agreed to collectively contribute US$4.4m in staff to the Sakai Project.
The OKI Project and uPortal, via Jasig (with Carl Jacobson), also joined as
Sakai co-founders. In December, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation added
US$2.4m to the Sakai Project based on the strength of the partners and
their commitment to implement Sakai. In February 2004, the William and
Flora Hewlett Foundation seeded the Sakai Educational Partners Program
(SEPP) with US$300,000 as half of its first year startup budget. SEPP was
announced in March with 19 founding educational partners.

2. New Sakai Accessibility (a11y) Chair

Please welcome Matt Clare, Manager of eLearning in the Centre for
Pedogagical Innovation, Brock University, as the new Sakai CLE
Accessibility Chair. Brock University is located in Ontario, Canada.
Ontario has put WCAG2 AA web-accessibility requirements into law that is
being phased in over time. (If interested, check out Matt's blog post on
the subject athttp://mattclare.ca/blog/2013/07/29/1623/).

Special thank you to the previous Chair Joseph Humbert from Indiana
University, who has provided outstanding leadership for about two years,
and to Indiana University, which has carried the leadership role for about
five years.

Also thank you to long time members Gonzalo Silverio, University of
Michigan, and Mary Stores, Indiana University, for their ongoing
contributions to the Accessibility WG (working group) over a number of
years.

3. Incubation Process

The development of an incubation process -- providing scaffolding for the
formation of new projects and communities of interest through their
critical formative stages -- was an early objective for the Apereo
Foundation. I am pleased to report that the Incubation Working Group, ably
chaired by Jaeques Koeman, has completed the first stage of consultation
and review, and that documentation detailing the new process is available
at http://www.apereo.org/content/incubation . The process was approved by
the Apereo Board in August.

The Working Group conducted widespread community consultation over the
course of several months, including a detailed online survey, interviews,
and face-to-face sessions at Open Apereo 2013. Many thanks to all those who
gave their time and contributed.

The new process places great emphasis on effective mentoring processes for
new projects, software communities, and communities of interest. In coming
weeks you will see appeals to participate in the development of an Apereo
Mentors Program. This will include a number of training opportunities.
Please consider participating, and watch this newsletter and the Apereo
website for further details.

5. Welcoming and Anti Harassment Policy

The Apereo Foundation has a history, paved through Sakai and Jasig, for
welcoming the technical work and projects created by diverse organizations
of people. We've learned that exposure to people who are different from
yourself provides an individual with fresh perspectives, new ideas, and
inspired creative contributions. Successful collaboration for the ongoing
development of open technologies and innovation requires that our Apereo
Foundation be supportive to all who might want to participate and
contribute. We have an opportunity to be leaders in the open source
community. We can provide an open and welcoming environment and show that
open technologies depend on talent and contribution, not on gender, country
of origin, or ethnicity. With that in mind, we wanted to make a value
statement in a positive and pro-active way. You'll find the new Apereo
Welcoming Policy posted on the Apereo website at
http://www.apereo.org/content/apereo-welcoming-policy. Please take a
moment to read through the policy. We hope that each person's experience
in connection to an Apereo project, event, or conference meets our high
standard of welcoming behavior. We believe that by taking this step, we
are encouraging the most participation from the greater community, and that
our organization will benefit from the creative energy that a friendly,
diverse group generates.

6. Update -- Sakai Teaching and Learning Initiative

Colleagues, I want to report on a Sakai Teaching and Learning call that was
held recently as the group is starting to move towards an actionable plan
and it would be very useful to get input from a broad cross section of the
community.

After a series of conference calls following the Open Apereo conference
(see https://confluence.sakaiproject.org/x/BwrzB), the Sakai Teaching and
Learning Group has begun to develop plans to engage in a process to review
the Lesson Builder/Lessons tool being developed by Rutgers University (and
others) as a means to identify new capabilities and new user interface
designs that would enhance its use from a teaching and learning
perspective. Our hope is that this process, once matured, could become a
model for work with other Sakai tools and capabilities as well as means to
engage in longer-term strategic planning for the product. Central to this
work is the commitment that once new capabilities and designs are
identified, that the group would work to engage institutional decision
makers as a means to help find the resources needed to support the related
development effort.

Over the past few weeks there has been an effort to engage in a preliminary
effort to review the Lesson Builder/Lessons tool which has been lead by
Marilyn Dispensa and Rob Fentress, as well as several others. Some of the
outcomes of this work are documented at:
https://confluence.sakaiproject.org/display/PED/Lessons+Tool%3A+Best+Practices+and+Suggestions.
At the same time, the group has identified the need to also engage in a
usability review and wish to make this part of the review process as well.
Based on this preliminary work and discussions, the Teaching and Learning
group working on a document that will outline how we might engage in a
review process.

You can find a draft T&L Capability Review Process document at:
https://confluence.sakaiproject.org/x/QwzzB We are encouraging everyone to
look at this draft and either add to it or post comments as means of
providing feedback. Our hope is to complete the process document in the
few weeks and then engage in the review effort more formally. As we start
up the more formal review process we will be rescheduling our calls as we
know there are folks interested in participating who cannot make the
current call schedule.

7. Marist College Concludes its First Sakai-Based MOOC and Plans to
Expand Initiative

Marist College is concluding our first MOOC on Enterprising Computing,
which has been run out of our School of Computer Science and Mathematics
and was launched in mid-July. The MOOC has been run on Sakai 2.8 using
Lesson Builder as the primary content delivery tool without any major
customization. We have been very pleased with the outcomes as enrollments,
which we had thought would reach no more than 100, are currently at 1100
students with over 12% having already completed the course (which is much
higher than the typical 5% rate). We are now working on developing a
"peer-to-peer" MOOC in the area of fashion, which will be created by
students who will then run the MOOC in the spring. We are also planning on
re-running our Enterprise Computing MOOC in the spring term with plans to
leverage the Open Academic Environment as means to sustain an academic
community beyond the end of the MOOC.

12. SNAPP -- Forum Analysis Tool Integration for Sakai CLE

I am writing to you regarding a new visual analytics tool integration with
Sakai called SNAPP (Social Network Analysis & Pedagogical Practices).
SNAPP is a client-side browser-based bookmarklet application tool that
allows users to visualize the network of interactions resulting from
discussion forum posts and replies. The network visualization of forum
interactions provides an opportunity for teachers to rapidly identify
patterns of user behavior -- at any stage of course progression. SNAPP was
developed to extract all user interactions from various commercial and open
source learning management systems (LMS) such as BlackBoard (including the
former WebCT) and Moodle. Now Marist College has been able to extend SNAPP
tool and provide an integration with Sakai CLE (v2.8x & v2.9x). SNAPP for
Sakai is a simple tool to deploy and is compatible for both Mac and PC
users and operates currently in Firefox.

Please refer to the SNAPP home page on the Sakai Confluence Wiki for more
interesting details about how SNAPP opens a new dimension for forum
analysis. The early work about SNAPP for Sakai CLE can be found at the
following link:

13. University of Murcia Upgrades to CLE 2.9.2

On July 31st, the University of Murcia's Technical Team proudly announced
that their Sakai CLE 2.7.2 instance was successfully upgraded to Sakai CLE
2.9.2. Their local instance is called Aula Virtual and the system was out
of service for less than 36 hours. Aula Virtual includes all the Sakai Core
tools and some other contrib tools like "SignUp," "Gradebook 2" and
"Videoconference." They also have a set of local tools developed inside
Sakai to support their users, like "Official Records," "Official Alumni,"
"Syllabus," "Calls for exams," "Optical Reader Exam Correction,"
"Synchronization sites," "Users Management" and "Custom Site Creation."
Some of those official tools include integration with Smart Card Signature
and connection with content management systems like Alfresco. Their
customization includes the development of the Sakai Course Management to
integrate Aula Virtual with their Student Information System. Their roadmap
includes the upgrade to Sakai CLE 2.9.3 sometime during the last weeks of
September 2013.

If you want to read the full story behind the migration and all the
challenges faced, feel free to check out their confluence site at

15. Planning for Open Learning Analytics Initiative

Following the Open Apereo conference in June, a number of institutions and
Commercial Affiliates who have been exploring the emerging learning
analytics field have been holding informal meetings to discuss a framework
for a large-scale open learning analytics initiative which could be
launched under Apereo. Based on the outcomes of these initial discussions,
a broader dialog was undertaken which included the Society for Learning
Analytics Research (SoLAR), the Open Academic Analytics Initiative, edX,
Creative Commons, and CIC. A number of short-term initiatives have come
from these discussions, including a small-scale hackathon that Marist
College and edX have organized to explore their two learning analytics
systems. Outcome from these smaller efforts will help inform plans to seek
funding to support a larger scale project.

16. Apereo Open Academic Environment (OAE) Pilot Begins

With the release of OAE Phoenix over the summer, the current project
partners, University of Cambridge, Georgia Tech and Marist College, are
starting up both local pilots as well as an inter-institutional pilot in
which faculty, student and staff from all three institutions will leverage
the "permeability" feature of OAE to allow users to share and collaborate
between their institutions. The project will be holding a multi-day
planning meeting in late September during which plans for future
development work, which will be driven by user needs based on our pilot
work, will be mapped out. A project update will be posted following this
meeting to share details with the larger community.

17. Sakai Teaching and Learning Group Update

The Sakai Teaching and Learning Group has been engaged in a couple of
initiatives following the Open Apereo conference, including launching the
2014 Teaching with Sakai Innovation Award (TWSIA) Committee, Chair by Salwa
Khan from Texas State University, and a new effort focused on developing
processes by which the Teaching and Learning group can collaborate more
with those engaged in Sakai development work as means to provide feedback
on system capabilities. As means to test out and explore how the group
might engage in such work, they are currently reviewing the Lesson Builder
tool and providing feedback to Rutgers who has led its development. Details
on these initiatives and how to get involved can be found on the Sakai Wiki

21. Apereo OAE Phoenix 1.2

The Apereo Open Academic Environment (OAE) project team is pleased to
announce the second minor release of the OAE Phoenix release; OAE Phoenix
1.2.

OAE Phoenix 1.2 upgrades the Hilary back-end to Node.js 0.10 and brings
some user-facing improvements like Administration UI improvements, CAS
authentication mappings and a number of bug fixes. In the background,
ongoing work on performance testing, automated UI testing and automated
cluster deployment has been going on, which is now nearing completion.

Try it out

The source code has been tagged with version number 0.2.2 and can be
downloaded from the following repositories:

Back-end: https://github.com/oaeproject/Hilary/tree/0.2.2
Front-end: https://github.com/oaeproject/3akai-ux/tree/0.2.2

Documentation on how to install the system can be found at
https://github.com/oaeproject/Hilary/blob/0.2.2/README.md.

The repository containing all deployment scripts can be found at
https://github.com/oaeproject/puppet-hilary.

Changelog

CAS Authentication mappings

It is now possible to map the OAE display name, e-mail, locale and timezone
against CAS attributes released by a CAS authentication server. All of this
can be configured on the fly through the Administration UI.

Administration UI improvements

- A tenant's host name can now be modified on the fly through the
administration UI.
- A number of browser caching and back-end caching consistency bugs in the
Tenants API have been fixed.
- Added appropriate validation when creating new tenants
- Refactored the Tenants API and increased test coverage

Mime type recognition

Improved mime type recognition has been put in place for uploaded files,
ensuring that files uploaded from any browser will be appropriately
recognized.

Accessibility improvements

All modal dialogs that have a type-ahead component as the first focusable
element will now receive appropriate focus when opening the modal. Next to
that, a number of text alternatives for non-textual content have been added.

API improvements

All feeds that support paging now return a 'nextToken' parameter that can
be used to request the next page of results. This takes away the need to
know which field to use for paging and should make it easier to use the
REST APIs. A number of improvements have been made to the OAE UI APIs as
well.

UI translations

The Spanish OAE translation is now back at 100% completeness, thanks to
Samuel Gutiérrez Jiménez-Peña and Toni Devís López.

Node 0.10 upgrade

The Hilary back-end, as well as the activity and preview processor nodes,
have been upgraded from Node.js 0.8 to 0.10 after extensive performance
testing.

Production improvements

A bug that was preventing Etherpad documents from being published when
using multiple Etherpad servers has been resolved.

24. Portfolios for the Future of Sakai

The Open Source Portfolio (OSP) tools in Sakai are well known for their
assessment matrices and sharable portfolios. Although these tools have
served the community well, more flexibility and expanded reporting
capabilities are needed to address the needs of current and future
portfolio users in Sakai. Kyoto University, MATI Montreal, and Three Canoes
LLC have teamed up to launch Portfolios for the Future of Sakai. We aim to
provide a flexible solution in the spirit of OSP that is LTI-enabled for
integration with the Sakai CLE. Our solution builds on the work done at
MATI Montreal with WAD (soon to be renamed). WAD is a portfolio prototyping
tool that can be used to quickly and iteratively design a working portfolio
and can then be used to put the portfolio into production. WAD is already
in successful use for three schools at the University of Montreal. The new
functionality has enabled Kyoto University to capture the many nuances of
an assessment portfolio workflow for a new doctoral program in global
leadership. Through the work of Three Canoes LLC, WAD is now LTI-enabled
for use in Sakai 2.8 and 2.9. Kyoto University will provide access to
version 6 of WAD using its Sakai 2.9 instance known as PandA.

In the near future our project will apply to become an Apereo Incubation
Project. A major part of incubation will be a formalization of the process
by which other institutions can join and contribute to our project. Our aim
is to eventually release an open source, LTI-enabled, portfolio application
that is suitable for use in the Sakai CLE.

27. Gradebook Fix for Sakai CLE 2.9.1 and 2.9.2

If you are upgrading from CLE 2.9.0 (or earlier) to CLE 2.9.1 or later,
please consider upgrading to CLE 2.9.3 instead, available here:
http://source.sakaiproject.org/release/2.9.3/ .

If you need to use CLE 2.9.1 or CLE 2.9.2 instead of upgrading to CLE
2.9.3, your next best option is to apply the patches associated with
https://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/SAK-23733 . SAK-23733 fixes an issue
with the gradebook which affects the Lessons tool, and some Contrib tools
(like Mneme and JForum). In some cases the bug prevents students from
seeing the grades assigned from these tools and does not include these
grades in the course grade calculation. Please consult with your system
administrator and feel free to send any questions to
sakai-dev at collab.sakaiproject.org .
