Sakai Open Academic Environment (OAE) 1.1.0 release

The Sakai Community is pleased to announce the release of the Sakai OAE version 1.1.0.

Sakai OAE is an open-source platform that promotes collaboration and sharing between users and interoperability between systems. It embraces a new vision for academic collaboration informed by the needs of learners, teachers and researchers.

Academic networking capabilities encourage people to connect and participate actively in communities that span beyond the traditional boundaries of classroom and institution.  Powerful capabilities around content – creation, authoring, reuse, presentation, and commenting – permit mash-ups and remixable experiences of ideas, connectivity, dialog and media. Enhanced search capabilities aid discovery of people and content. A widget-based architecture simplifies both development and integration with external systems.

WHAT'S NEW

OAE 1.1.0 introduces the following new features:

create, gather and share collections of related content items
restrict anonymous access to user information and content with enhanced user privacy options
import/export IMS content packages (packages imported as a flat structure for this release)
embed Sakai CLE tools in an OAE document using a new sakai2tools widget
leverage numerous accessibility improvements
scan search results quickly using infinite scrolling
create OAE worlds using templates and a "middle layer" world creation service.
export OAE worlds as templates for easy reuse
utilize a new migration framework when upgrading between OAE versions
run OAE in a cluster with redundant search and application server nodes for scalability and uptime
integrate OAE with Kaltura's video platform*
enjoy a variety of UI and back-end refinements designed to enhance the user experience
and we also fixed some bugs too
*Note: OAE/Kaltura integration requires installation of a separate bundle that is not distributed with Sakai OAE due to licensing restrictions.

KNOWN ISSUES

KERN-2375, KERN-2458 and other related tickets): users have reported that display counts do not always match the actual number of viewable content items. While calculating counts is an asynchronous operation where latency in the request/response cycle cannot always be avoided, our underlying event-triggered approach to counting content is not working as envisioned and post-1.1.0 refactoring will be required to reduce if not eliminate the miscounts that users sometimes encounter in the UI.

SAKIII-4266: removing a managed (e.g., owned) content item from a library results in an orphaned item no longer under the control of the original manager.

SAKIII-3627: copying and pasting the File & Document widget into a page can cause the browser to crash with an unresponsive script error.

SAKIII-4264: users have reported unresponsive script errors when dragging large numbers of items to the Add Content overlay.

SAKIII-4614: only the collection icon appears after adding a collection in page; the collection itself is not embedded.

SAKIII-4588: when clicking through content items in a collection the associated URL is not updated. Users are thus currently prevented from bookmarking or emailing a link to a particular document.

SAKIII-4493: a collection that is added to a group cannot be removed from My Library.

SAKIII-4305: dragging a widget using a mouse to any column or position other than the top of the left most column is not working properly. This is especially evident after switching to a single column view as all the widgets are stacked in one column.

SAKIII-4560: users with document view permissions are unable to access Sakai CLE dropbox folders made available by the sakai2tools widget.

SAKIII-4623 clicking on the navigation bar messages icon only shows the most recent message rather than the message count displayed by the icon.

SAKIII-4257 infinite scrolling feature provides no count of total items returned by the search.

UPGRADING

 Upgrading to oae-1.1.0 from an earlier version (e.g., oae-1.0.2) involves a number of steps that MUST be followed in order to avoid dropping your existing data.
