Sakai Community Members -

It is with great excitement that the committee announces a number of significant changes to the Teaching With Sakai Innovation Award (TWSIA) process that will affect the entire Sakai community. Since the Denver Conference, the Teaching With Sakai Innovation Award (TWSIA) committee has been working diligently to revise important aspects of the award process, based on feedback received at the conference from previous years' winners and applicants.

While the official press release for the 2011 Award will not be distributed for another month, we want to give you a preview of changes to the award process.

The 2011 TWSIA Committee has proposed four Award Categories for submissions, from which winners will be selected. This will replace the current process of selecting 1stand 2nd place winners and honorable mentions from all submissions.

The new Award Categories are:

- Fully Online/Hybrid Courses,

- K-12 (primary and secondary education),

- Traditional Higher Education (including web-enhanced courses),

- Non-Traditional/Non-Course Sites (including Project Sites, Student Sites, Portfolios).

 The committee has also:

- provided a definition of innovation that will be used for the Award,

- revised the TWSIA Rubric to reflect aspects of the new categories,

- is refining a new judging process,

- and has designed an all new Sponsorship Model to help support these new initiatives.

More information about these changes and the Award, including past entries and award winners is available at http://openedpractices.org/twsia.

While a lot has been accomplished towards expanding the TWSIA for 2011 there is still a significant amount of work to do and we need to ask for your participation.

You can help us in many ways, for example by participating is the weekly calls which takes place on Mondays at noon (US) Eastern Time. In order to determine if there is a better meeting time we are setting up a Meeting Poll through Doodle (http://www.doodle.com/saribz6k3pni4bdw). If you would like to participate in the call, please indicate your availability in the Doodle poll.

You can also sign up for the TWSIA email list at http://collab.sakaiproject.org/mailman/listinfo/twsia).

You may have a particular interest or skill that would benefit the community and the TWSIA award process. For example, you may be able to help us:

- Write press releases, flyers, text for the website

- Publish flyers

- By being a preliminary judge to help select finalists

- By participating in the committee and helping shape the Award

- By spreading the news about the Award around your institution

- By nominating an individual to be a final judge

- By applying for the Award

Or tell us how you can help by listing your availability at: http://bit.ly/TWSIA11.

We hope that you will find this information useful and that you will consider joining us in our continuing efforts to improve the Teaching With Sakai Innovation Award.

Attached you will find two informational flyers we would ask you to send out or display in appropriate locations at your institution. One is a call for support and the other is a pre-announcement about the award changes for faculty and designer/developers.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions,
