Hi,

The Sakai Accessibility Working Group meets today, Thursday May 5, 2011 at 2pm Eastern / 11am Pacific.

The focus of Today's meeting will be more discussion on open 2.7.2 Accessibility JIRAs, working on Sakai 2.9,  Sakai 2.9 UI Updates, issues using the Sakai with VoiceOver, and starting an Sakai OAE Accessibility Review.

·         Sakai 2.7.2 Maintenance Release Management Process has started

o   If there are specific accessibility fixes you want in the release let us know

·         Sakai 2.9 Development, UI Updates

·         Sakai CLE (2.x) and VoiceOver

·         Accessibility Review Updates

·         Sakai Core Tools / 3rd Party Accessibility Certification

o   Make list of tools we recommend included for certification (possible with priority levels?)

o   Rate each tool on the list towards its level of accessibility and the effort required to fix

o   Accessibility Certification would place an increased emphasis on technical accessibility

·         Sakai 2.8.0 Accessibility Documentation

o   Possibility of having some accessibility documentation on the sakaiproject.org site.

·         Updated JAWS ARIA Support Document

o   Mary pointed out that there is an updated document on JAWS's support of ARIA written for developers by Freedom Scientific. It can be found on the web here: http://www.freedomscientific.com/PDF/visionloss/manuals/DevDoc/JAWS-ARIA-Support.doc

·         Sakai 2.9 UI Updates

·         Accessibility Testing

·         Open JIRAs

o   Reorganized Outstanding JIRA issues pages

o   Need to review JIRAs to backport for 2.7.2 - What is the timing?

·         Ongoing Accessibility Issues / Updates

o   VoiceOver Issues

§  Action Bars that include ARIA Role of "menu"

§  Icon coding style as used in the WIKI tool

o   FCKeditor Issues

§  Fix for FCKeditor keyboard trap issue

·         Put comment in fckeditor configuration files about accessibility opportunity in tab key handling

·         Add info in Sakai Administrator documentation on the same configuration option?

o   Form input buttons with ASCII symbols instead of meaningful text

§  Fixes in for Assignments and Announcements

§  Appears in a few more places - Need to create more JIRA Subtasks to fix each occurrence

o   Instructional Text that appears before each select element with onchange context change needs updating

§  Create patches for 2.8.x and 2.7.x - Will JIRA soon

o   Select elements w/onchange event handlers

§  Have fix, starting testing in 2.8.x

§  Not sure how to implement

o   Table Issues - Joe /Gonzalo working on this

§  Tables with no row headers

§  Incorrect Table Summaries

§  Blank / Empty Columns

§  Inconsistent layout / use

o   Forums

§  Difficult to understand context / structure

o   Multi-select select element difficulties

§  Difficult / Impossible(?) to select multiple email recipients with screen-readers

o   Pop-up messages / Tool-tips

§  Need to identify use cases and corresponding best practices for each

§  Will create best practice models and test with Mary / Community

o   User Interface Inconsistencies

§  Table issues being looked at

§  Need to address tool menu bars

§  Workflow buttons - Save, Submit, Cancel, Continue, etc.

§  Need to identify priority areas

o   Implicitly labeled checkboxes and radio buttons - Have fix, will work on getting into next releases

o   ARIA Landmarks

§  Test insertion of ARIA landmarks in the portal for 2.9
