The Sakai Accessibility Working Group meets today, Thursday June 2, 2011 at 2pm Eastern / 11am Pacific.

The focus of Today's meeting will be more discussion on Sakai 3/OAE Accessibility, Sakai 2.9 UI Updates, and the Sakai 2.7 VPAT.

§  Mary working on functional accessibility analysis with Screen Readers (JAWS mostly)

§  Joe working on functional accessibility analysis with Dragon NaturallySpeaking (voice recognition software) and assisting with technical analysis

o   Prep for this is keeping Brian busy - should return to normal after conference is over

·         Ongoing Accessibility Issues / Updates

o   VoiceOver Issues

§  Action Bars that include ARIA Role of "menu"

·         Considering recommendation to remove ARIA menu role from action bars and replacing it with the navigation landmark.

§  Icon coding style as used in the WIKI tool

·         Joe looking into this

o   "Add" and "Action" menus in Sakai CLE Resources and Drop Box tools

§  Difficult to use with screen-readers

§  Working on using jQuery UI Menu widget

§  Initial testing with JAWS and VoiceOver looks good

o   FCKeditor Issues

§  Fix for FCKeditor keyboard trap issue

·         Put comment in fckeditor configuration files about accessibility opportunity in tab key handling

·         Add info in Sakai Administrator documentation on the same configuration option?

o   Form input buttons with ASCII symbols instead of meaningful text

§  Fixes in for Assignments and Announcements

§  Appears in a few more places - Need to create more JIRA Subtasks to fix each occurrence

o   Instructional Text that appears before each select element with onchange context change needs updating

§  Create patches for 2.8.x and 2.7.x - Will JIRA soon

o   Select elements w/onchange event handlers

§  Have fix, plan to starting testing in 2.9.x

§  Not sure how best to implement

o   Table Issues - Joe /Gonzalo working on this

§  Tables with no row headers

§  Incorrect Table Summaries

§  Blank / Empty Columns

§  Inconsistent layout / use

o   Forums

§  Difficult to understand context / structure

o   Multi-select select element difficulties

§  Difficult / Impossible(?) to select multiple email recipients with screen-readers

·         This has improved in JAWS 12

·         How is it in other screen-readers? Need to write a walkthrough script to evaluate this.

o   Pop-up messages / Tool-tips

§  Need to identify use cases and corresponding best practices for each

§  Will create best practice models and test with Mary / Community

o   User Interface Inconsistencies

§  Table issues being looked at

§  Need to address tool menu bars

§  Workflow buttons - Save, Submit, Cancel, Continue, etc.

§  Need to identify priority areas

o   Implicitly labeled checkboxes and radio buttons - Have fix, will work on getting into next releases
